Canadian Man Seriously Injured After Jumping on Polar Bear to Protect His Wife

Canadian Man Jumps on Polar Bear to Save Wife, Suffers Serious Injuries

A man in Canada’s far north sustained severe injuries after jumping on a polar bear to protect his wife from an attack.

According to international media, as reported by Telegrafi, the unidentified man is expected to recover despite sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The incident was confirmed by the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service.

The couple had left their home around 5:00 AM local time on Tuesday to search for their dogs when a polar bear – standing in their path – attacked the woman.

The attack took place in Fort Severn First Nation, a small community of about 400 people in remote northern Ontario.

“The woman slipped to the ground as her husband jumped on the bear to prevent the attack,” police stated. “The bear then turned on the man, causing significant injuries to his arm and leg.”

A neighbor arrived shortly after with a firearm and fired several shots at the bear, which retreated into a nearby forest and later died from its wounds.

The Nishnawbe Aski Police continued to patrol the area to ensure no other bears were posing a threat to the community.

Alysa McCall, a scientist at Polar Bear International, told CBC that polar bear attacks on humans are rare. She noted that encounters are more likely in regions where bears’ natural habitats are impacted by environmental changes.

The man’s bravery and quick actions are being hailed by the local community, underscoring the risks and resilience of those living in northern polar bear territories.
