Norway Becomes the First Country to Eliminate Fuel-Powered Cars: 9 Out of 10 New Cars Sold in 2024 Are Fully Electric

According to registration figures released today, 9 out of 10 cars sold in Norway are fully electric, bringing the country closer to its goal of exclusively adding electric vehicles to its roads by 2025. Fully electric vehicles accounted for 88.9% of all new cars sold in 2024, up from 82.4% in 2023, as reported by the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV).

“Norway will be the first country in the world to effectively eliminate petrol and diesel-powered cars from the new car market,” said Kristina Bu, head of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association.

This milestone underscores Norway’s global leadership in transitioning to sustainable transportation. The nation’s progressive policies, including generous incentives for electric car buyers, extensive charging infrastructure, and high taxes on fuel-powered vehicles, have significantly accelerated the adoption of electric cars.

With this achievement, Norway sets a benchmark for other countries striving to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, proving that a future dominated by electric vehicles is not only possible but within reach.
