Following his speech in Parliament, the leader of the Democratic Party (PD), Sali Berisha, addressed reporters outside the Assembly, focusing on the preparations for the upcoming May 11 parliamentary elections—particularly the process of selecting candidates.
Berisha announced that the Democratic Party will soon begin internal consultations with its political coordinators and regional leaders to compile a list of candidates for Parliament. These consultations are expected to be comprehensive and inclusive, aiming to gather input from various levels of the party’s structure.
Once the initial phase of consultations is completed, the PD leadership (Kryesia e Partisë Demokratike) will convene to finalize the official list of candidates that will represent the party in the elections.
A More Transparent Selection Process
Berisha emphasized that this year’s candidate selection process will be “more transparent than ever before,” with the goal of truly reflecting the will of the party’s membership base. He underscored the importance of fair and broad-based representation, noting that essential modifications will be made to ensure inclusivity—particularly for women, youth, and minority communities.
He stated that the party is committed to strengthening democratic values within its own ranks by involving its members in meaningful ways. According to Berisha, this transparency will not only enhance the party’s image but also inspire greater trust among voters ahead of the elections.
Inclusivity at the Core
Berisha further noted that if serious gaps are identified during the consultation process—especially in terms of community representation—the party leadership will intervene to correct those imbalances. The aim, he said, is to ensure diversity and inclusivity within the list of candidates, reflecting the full spectrum of Albania’s social and demographic composition.
This move is seen as part of a broader effort by the Democratic Party to revitalize its political platform and reconnect with the electorate, following a challenging political period marked by internal divisions and shifting alliances.
As the May 11 elections approach, PD is positioning itself as a restructured and more representative party, with leadership pledging openness, fairness, and a renewed focus on public interest and democratic participation.
Further updates are expected in the coming days as consultations begin and candidate names start to emerge.
